MOVING ARTICLE ON DUNEDIN BREAST CANCER SUFFERERS

A moving article featured recently in the ODT describing three brave Dunedin womens fight against breast cancer with a determination to live – not die from the disease. Bev Peavers, Lara Malcolm and Sarah Marshall speak candidly about their own personal experience with the disease that has changed their lives. Having hope, regular breast checks, lowering your stress levels and not letting the fear of cancer rule their lives was a message they wanted to express to other women. Sarah Marshall was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, three days after her initital manual breast examine by her GP she found herself in hospital undergoing surgery to remove her breast. Sarah’s mother died at age 38 of breast cancer. Sarah has also been told that her chances of remaining cancer free for the next 10 years is between 10-20%.

Mother and daughter, Bev Peevers and Lara Malcolm are hoping for a breakthrough in cancer treatments to help prevent them from the disease. Mrs Peevers grandmother, mother and three aunts all had breast cancer. They feel that they have a time bomb ticking but do not want the fear of cancer to dictate their lives. They emphasise the need for women to have regular breast checks and make the most out of life.  To read this article visit our news album and select the article.

LESS IS MORE ACCORDING TO JAN

Less (fat) means ‘more out of life’ for Jan since her lifechanging decision to lose 35 kilograms in excess weight. The health and lifestyle benefits for Jan have been HUGE. Not only does she look great, she feels great too and is proud to show the world just how life changing her experience has been. Jan recently spoke to the Fiordland Womens Association in Te Anau and to demonstrate the amount of fat she has actually lost, Jan presented the audience with the equivalent in actual fat. For the past 30 years Jan has been overweight, with a weight at the beginning of last year 108 kg. Jan had had enough and decided to join Sureslim setting herself manageable goals like every 10kg she would go out and buy herself some bling. The weight fell off and so did a lifetime of asthma, swollen feet and flat shoes. Cutting out processed foods and watching her nutrition by eating healthy made all of the difference. She can finally wear sexy high heels – something she was never able to do. For her doll business the positive spin off is more energy and enthusiasm along with a fab bod to feel great about. Good on you Jan – you are an inspiration.
